Availability Versus Health When Shopping For Vegetables

By Diana Lensbury

The supermarket does not often provide a wide selection of organic produce from which to choose. It is usually very limited on the amount that it may carry from local farmers, as well. For this reason, when shopping for vegetables, it can be beneficial to first go to neighborhood fruit and vegetable stands or the local farmers market. The availability of healthier produce may be greater.

In order to ensure that a person is getting the most amount of vitamins and minerals possible from their vegetable selection, they need to consume it as quickly as possible after it has been harvested. This can be difficult to do when purchasing items from the grocery store because it is not always apparent where it came from or how long it had to ship to get there.

Regional farmers try to supply their produce to the stands as quickly as possible so as to reduce the amount of spoilage to their crops. Using less chemicals and pesticides to preserve the vegetables for longer periods of time means that they are a healthier option, but will not last as long. Some grocery stores do offer organic selections, but there is usually not a great amount to choose from.

Often it is necessary for farmers to freeze vegetables after they are harvested and then thaw them on the way to the supermarket. This changes and limits the taste. Fresher produce, with the application of less chemicals, are not only healthier, they taste better too.

Supermarkets do offer a larger variety of vegetables, however. This is because an area is limited in the type of vegetables that may be grown there due to the type of soil and the weather. The grocery store does provide more options on the types of produce that can be purchased and consumed.

Not only will using both venues enhance the opportunity for a wider selection and healthier options, but it will enable them to gain insight from those that run the local stand or market. These people usually have very sound advice as to how to choose vegetables that are ripe. It also helps to support the local economy.

Shopping for vegetables can be very difficult, especially when trying to ensure that all the health benefits and taste are preserved. The atmosphere and soil in an area is conducive to producing only certain types of vegetables. So, while fresher is better, it is necessary to also shop at the grocery store for a wider selection.
