Children Should Be Given Meat From Infancy

By Jack Wogan

A few months ago our son refused to see meat, let alone eat it but now he can't wait to have his steak. How is this possible? I started cooking proper meals and spent more time with him.

In the not so distant past we used to come home late and often ordered takeaway. He usually was in bed when we arrived so his eating routine could not be controlled. He started looking ill so we took him to a clinic for some tests. The results were worrying so I decided to work from home and thus be in charge of things.

A few months ago our son refused to see meat, let alone eat it! These days he can't wait to have steaks or grilled chicken. I am a very grateful mother, especially now that I've read the conclusions of a recent study. It seems that children who eat meat develop more muscle mass and get high scores on mental testing. All sensible doctors say children should eat all kinds of meat, as long as it is fresh, lean and cooked in a healthy way. You shouldn't do the same mistake I did during my son's infancy. Feed your baby meat; don't be afraid of it. Read about the various methods of preparation and find a good butchery that trades in quality organic meat.

I know it's difficult being a parent but it's also rewarding once you start doing the right things. I remember the time when we'd come home late and order in, when there was not time for cooking or playing with our son. Everything is different now; we have regular meals and talk more. We only go out on special occasions as restaurant dishes have more fat, sugar and salt.

All specialists agree that eating home cooked meals is much healthier for the whole family. I have come to realize that it also sets a great example for our son about the importance of food. We now start the day with a fabulous breakfast and end it with a lovely dinner. Whenever we have the chance, I take my son shopping and thus I teach him about the nutritional values of different foods. He can read so he checks labels carefully; I am glad he understands what we eat matters a lot.
